Mindfulness based cognitive therapy

MIndfulness Based Cognitive Therapy or MBCT is a type of CBT that incorporates the use of mindfulness & mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness can be defined as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and
non-judgmentally” (Kabat Zinn, 1994, p. 4).  Mindfulness training therefore teaches you to be aware of both internal (e.g. thoughts, feelings, physical sensations) & external (e.g. sights, sounds) stimuli in an accepting, observing & non-judgmental way.  In this way MBCT helps you to be less reactive to the negative thoughts & feelings that often characterize problems like depression & anxiety.  It promotes a new way of relating to these thoughts & feelings, one that is kinder & gentler, leading to a reduction in distress & negative mood states.

Mindfulness enables you to choose the best & most helpful way to respond to negative thoughts & feelings.  This may involve taking action & "doing" such as solving a problem.  Alternatively it may require you to "let your thoughts be", let them pass through without acting on them.
